Modern Day Socrates???

          Socrates... Socrates ...Socrates
What does one think about when one hears Socrates? Not many people actually know anything about him. So let’s begin by stating who he is and what he did. Socrates might be considered by many the first actual philosopher. He taught in Athens with Socratic Method. Basically what he did was question everything. He made people question who are we? Why are we still here? Why do we believe in what we believe? And how much do I think I know about something.  Unfornately Socrates was given the death sentence for “corrupting the young”
Modern day Socrates??  I really don’t think there is anyone as close to being considered a modern day Socrates. You would think there would be a modern day Socrates here in the US because thanks to our first amendment. If I had to choose the closets resemblance to Socrates it would have to be Fernando Lopez.
Fernando Lopez is a staff at a boys and girls club. I consider him a role model. I can always go to Fernando for any advice or help in homework. When he sees me at my worst Fernando always tries motivating me. He always starts off by questioning me. He first begins with the question” why are you here?” If I would to answer simply because I have to he stays quite. He would have me reflect in my own thoughts and actually think why I still am where I am. He asks me what I am trying to accomplish. Most of the time I answer with I am here because I want to help make a difference. I am here to give back to my community and help make a better learning place. After every conversation with him I always end up being motivated. Simply just because I want to make a difference or because it will benefit in the long run.
Whenever I cannot make up my mind he always ask me “which way is more difficult?” he always tells me to strive for the best. Because he says the people who have the most do the most. Basically to be successful one has to prove it. So I consider Fernando the closest thing to a modern day Socrates. He uses the questions to benefit me in one way or another.

The Unexamined Life

In my opinion the unexamined life is not worth living for. One has to ask one self what their purpose is or if anything is going wrong in their life. An unexamined life is basically a lost life, a life without purpose.
An unexamined life is a life that has not been considered for. A life without a purpose. A life with absolutely nothing to strive for. If one actually stops and examines one self life then they can take into consideration everything surrounding them. They can see what is wrong with them therefore they might strive to fix it and actually having a goal. A life without a purpose is not a life at all.
Therefore one has to stop and ask one self “What am I doing here?” One needs to reflect what one is trying to achieve or obtain. Giving oneself an actual purpose. When one has a purpose then they start living their life. And this life can lead to multiple events. In the other hand an unexamined life has no future.
An unexamined life can also mean that someone does not care and just lives the way they want to. In other words they live according to their own rules. When people live by their own rules they start offending or disrespecting others. And no one wants to live in alienation because they have been shunned by everyone around them. Therefore that is why the unexamined life is not worth living for. Because it has absolutely no purpose and lives lost.

My Eulogy

Today is a day of laughter and reminiscing. Not a day of grief and depression. Today we are to honor this man known for many multiples names. With friends at school referred to as Campos. By friends outside of school just simply as Alex. Campos always thought of himself as an everyday normal person. Not really doing anything out of the ordinary.

Alex always had a thing for trying to help those in need. As I am aware of he was part of this organization called by Keystone. There he dedicated his life to help the community become a better and safer place. He once told me that they read to little first graders while at the same time set up college workshops to help college bound students with college seeking and applications. Any chance he would get he would be there to help.

Most of my time he spent was dedicated to school. Studying and finishing homework. But when he did have spare time he liked to play soccer. Soccer was his little scapegoat from all the stress. I always remember his famous soccer saying when a girl had a boyfriend” so what soccer has a goalie and it doesn’t mean you can’t score”

When things went negative Alex always try to make the best of it. He was always the one there smiling goofing around. He always was the one telling those dumb jokes but hey I always appreciated his effort. He always the one offering the shoulder to anyone who was in need it. Campos always strived to be a psychologist so giving out advice was his thing.

Alex was a great caring person. So today we honor what he did to all of us whether it was big or small. Heck he would be trying to make jokes about right now. Does anyone taste these cookies talk about being homemade. He would want us to be smiling about right now so what do you say we smile in honor of Alex. He will forever live in our heart
